The beginning of the French ars nova is marked by the appearance of measure tempus and its characteristic rhythm. The article traces the origin of tempus in the motets of Petrus de Cruce of the late 13 th century. The author discloses the new concept of tempus in the early motets of Philippe de Vitry, for what involves the tractate of Vitry «Ars nova», including its description. The ways of renewal rhythms of tempus in motets by Vitry 1320s - 1340 s are researched.
The article deals with analysis of the heritage of Stephen Sondheim, a famous composer, in the field of musical theatre. Having written scores for 13 mu sicals, he showed himsel fas a great experimentalist and an author of a unique musical style. As a rule, the so called "superfluous " people, a gallery of whose portraits is presented in this article, were main heroes of his musical works. The author examines some operas of French composers Gustave Charpentier and Alfred Brunea uin the light of naturalistic aesthetics.
