Certain distribution peculiarities of biting midge-larvae and pupae (Diptera, Heleidae) in the bodies of water

Krivosheina N.P.

Observations were made on Culicoides riethi and Bezzia nobilis. Pupation of the last instar larvae in a moist substrate occurs more rapidly than that of the larvae of the same instar but dwelling in a substarte beneath the water layer. Pupal development requires contact of their stigmae with atmosphere, whearas their remaining on moist substrate out of water is most favourable for the emergence of the adults.
