Adaptations of Anomopoda crustaceans (Crustacea, Cladocera) to the benthic mode of life

Kotov A.A.

Crustaceans of the order Anomopoda inhabit both pelagic and littoral freshwater zones. Different kinds of adaptations in representatives of different families and genera to the benthic mode of life are described. These adaptations are as follows: the incomplete molting, presence of mucous film on bodies, protection of head from the anterior side, presence of large lateral projections on valves and well-defined lateral armature of postado-men, presence of projections of preanal margin of postabdomen, specialization of setae and spines on the second antenna, especially large exopodites on limbs IV and V, reduction of compound eye, and well-developed large ocellus. Similar adaptations to the benthic mode of life in Anomopoda and Ostracoda are discussed.

Clypeo-cibarial apparatus, proboscis mobility, and cephalic foregut structure in Bombyliidae (Diptera)

Panov A.A.

Bombyliid clypeus is subdivided into five morpho-functional parts: the median centroclypeus, two lateral "membranes", and two sclerotized zones. The centroclypeus and lateral membranes are formed by solid scle-rotized cuticle and are apparently non-extensible. The dosal hinge, around which the centroclypeus turns with respect to the head capsule, is an intraclypeal structure and formed by solid cuticle. The true membranes occur only in the distal clypeal portion and at the bases of labrum and labium as well. In the long-proboscis bomby-liids, the labial base lies deeply in the head cavity, when the proboscis is in rest position. As in Stratiomyidae previously studied, the precerebral portion of bombyliid stomodeum dispalces greatly during proboscid movements. It makes impossible the functioning of radial pharyngeal diators, which disappear, and typical sclerotized pharynx transforms into an oesophagus-like tube. The formation of fulcrum is usually related to the acquisition of clypeus mobility. It took place repeatedly in several systematically distant dipteran groups.

Fecundity of

Guryanova Т.М.

In pine plantations of the Khoperskii Reserve (Voronezh region), the population of European pine sawfly is capable to preserve its structure. According to the data of the long-term monitoring (1969-2004), the population is in the status of mobile equilibrium represented by waves of cyclic outbreaks. The fecundity of a sawfly individual is 30-120 eggs. The cleavage of descendants according to the duration of their diapause and negative relations in the system of interacting organisms equalize the population fecundity. The fecundity correlates weakly with the sawfly population density: its mean value is about 70 eggs. During the population waves, it amounts to 56-88 eggs. The system exhibits both features of variability and constancy.

On the population structure of waterbirds from the Selenga River delta and Lake Baikal basin

Fefelov I.V., Tupitsyn I.I., Podkovyrov V.A.

The data of 1970-2000 on changes in the fauna, habitat state, numbers, and migratory behavior of birds associated with water of Lake Baikal basin, and the Selenga River delta in particular, are analyzed. The environmental conditions is suggested to stipulate the high variability of the bird population structure. The latter does not promotes the formation of isolated local populations and new taxa of birds in the Lake Baikal region. On the contrary, these conditions favor a labile migratory behavior of waterbirds and, probably, the absence of a strict population determination in migratory directions.
