Lemmus lemmus, L. s. sibiricus, L. s. portenkoi and L. amurensis have 50 acrocentric chromosomes in the diploid set (2n=NF=50). In L. s. chrysogaster 2n=50 but, besides, 46 acrocentrics, its chromosome set comprises two pairs of subtelocentric autosome (NF=54).In the genome of L. s. chrysogaster there is more C-heterochromatin than in all other studied forms of the genus Lemmus. In Females (L. s. chrysogaster x L. lemmus, L. s. sibiricus x L. amurensis) desynapsis of some chromosomes takes place during the first meiotic division, thus suggesting the genetic divergence of the parental forms. The cytogenetic peculiarities of L. s. chrysogaster confirm its species independence as L. chrysogaster J. A. Allen, apparently, conspecific with the North American L. trimucronatus and L. nigripes.
