1. Coefficients of accumulation (ratio of concentration of the radioisotope in the organisms to that in water 16—32 days after the beginning of the experiments) of Sr90, Ru106, Cs137 and Ce144 from water solutions with low concentrations of these isotopes (of the order of 10-6—10-5 curie/l) were determined in laboratory experiments for 30 species of fresh water plants and for 18 species of fresh-water animals (see tables I and 2).2. On the average, plants show higher coefficients of accumulation than animals; different species have very different coefficients of accumulation of different elements Strontium and caesium on the average show lower coefficients of accumulation than ruthenium, and especially cerium (see fig. 1).3. Coefficients of accumulation of different elements by different species may widely differ (from about 10 to more than 50,000); the data summarized in tables 1 and 2 show that species can be found with specifically low or high coefficients of accumulation for each of the four elements in question.
